Sek fun bbq house is quite deceiving but in a good way.its very much the definition of a hole in the wall.even the name of the store via the signage isnt all that visible
You would understandably be iffy about eating in a place like this and while deciding whether or not to actually dine here, we were told by their cashier to make up our minds fast because they do run out of food before closing.
After some walking around, ending up here was a pleasant surprise.
Ordered the duck and the bbq pork
Rice was large enough to share to be honest, and while i do scrimp on viands, i had enough leftover for another serving of their rice
Price is very much fair, pretty clean, quite fast service. The place is a bit small so seating might be a problem if theres a rush of people.
On another time walking past the place around 630pm, they did indeed run out of bbq pork so grabbing them fast and early is a good idea
I liked the duck and some of the dishes like fried rice get pretty lavish, although some had chewy meat. The pork and duck are only priced a little lower than other BBQ places but the meals with rice or noodles seemed good value - look expensive at $12-$14 but use the large takeaway containers so you get a lot of food (too much for me to eat for lunch so glad I got takeaway).
Don't be fooled by it's appearance, this little shop in Redfern is serving some of the best Chinese BBQ in Sydney.
I had been talking to a friend about the declining standards of the well known BBQ shops. Most of them are now underwhelming, or at best inconsistent. He told me to check this place out.
I ordered the double pork (roast pork and char siu pork) - to properly assess their BBQ prowess.
The char siu was glazed well and very flavoursome. I could pick up a slight taste of honey, which led me to believe they made their own glaze. The lady working later confirmed that all the sauces are made in house - no bottled stuff from the supermarket. This makes a huge difference.
The rice also deserves a special mention. Well flavoured from the sauce, and much better than the competition.
Would be great if they could add Hong Kong style milk tea and lemon tea to the menu as well, but maybe they don't have the space to make those kinds of drinks.
Would recommend for any fans of Chinese BBQ. Definitely worth the trip.
